As one of the largest housing associations in the North East, we recognise the impact our business activities can have on the environment and how, as a responsible organisation, we can take significant steps to reduce our carbon footprint.

As one of the largest housing associations in the north-east, we know we have a responsibility and opportunities to help tackle climate change.

This ranges from reducing the environmental impact of our business activities and housing to helping customers and staff make informed decisions that fit into their own lives.

Thinking about the planet also supports our core value to do the right thing for our customers, our people and our business.

We offer an extensive community investment programme and one of its key themes is to support ‘a greener, fairer future: by reducing, reusing and recycling’. This has resulted in tens of thousands of pounds in grants being awarded to environmental initiatives, from community gardens to a food recycling and redistribution centre.

We also have a community allotment near our office in Seaham, which we encourage tenants and the general public to be a part of, and benefit from.

We have made some great progress on our net-zero journey and were invited by One Carbon World to provide video clips detailing some of our achievements so far.

big green week

We recently took part in The Great Big Green Week. The UK’s biggest ever celebration of environmental action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

• We planted two new NatureArk pods at our allotment with help from Bioscapes.
• The Sunshine Co-Operative taught us about sustainable cooking and shopping local.
• RE:GEN delivered training on the importance of retrofit.
• We recycled IT equipment that was no longer needed.

Staff from believe housing will be encouraged to use and maintain the garden but the housing association also wants it to become a valued community resource.

Wildlife pods installed at local school

The environmental team at believe housing has donated several purpose-built habitats to schools and communities across the county, which will act as havens for local wildlife.

almost 600 trees planted for Earth Day

To celebrate Earth Day, believe housing planted a native tree for each of it's employees, to help improve the natural environment and enhance biodiversity in the region, as part of it's ongoing environmental pledge.

Primary school gets wildlife boost

believe housing held a series of activities for more than 230 pupils at Catchgate Primary School, near Stanley.

Youngsters got to build homes for bugs, plant fruit trees in the school grounds and discover why trees are important habitats for wildlife, for cleaning our air and providing food.
