affordable village homes completed

20 July 2021 - Latest news

The first pair of affordable homes on a development at the edge of County Durham have just been completed.

The three-bedroom houses in the village of Thorpe Thewles are the first of six to be handed over to multi-award-winning housing association believe housing. The houses have been built by Homes by Carlton on their Thorpe Paddocks development in the village which sits near Wynyard Woodland Park, close to the border between Teesside and County Durham.

believe housing has more than 18,000 homes, covering areas like rural Weardale and former mining villages on the Durham coast, but these are the first homes it will be providing in Thorpe Thewles.

All six of the new homes will be offered under believe housing’s m!ne ‘rent to buy’ brand. The government backed initiative is designed to ease the transition from renting to buying a home by providing subsidised rent; usually around 20% below the market rate. They are intended to help to bridge the gap between rental and traditional home ownership, allowing more people to climb the property ladder.

Simon Walker, Managing Director at Homes by Carlton, explained: “Our luxury housing development at Thorpe Thewles provides a wide range of family homes and we’re delighted to have incorporated six affordable homes on a rent to buy tenure. With Thorpe Thewles a sought-after location in the region, it’s great to be able to further support the journey to home ownership for young families and professionals in Teesside.”

Dan Mawson from believe housing’s Development Delivery Team, said: “The need for affordable homes doesn’t just exist in the town or city. Smaller communities have a real need for affordable homes too. I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to secure these affordable homes in Thorpe Thewles.

“Our new homes programme has always looked for ways to bring the benefits of secure affordable homes to as many communities as possible. It’s been a major part of our success and has been recognised on a national level.”

believe housing’s development programme has picked up major honours at the Guardian Public Service Awards and UK Housing Awards for its innovative approach to serving a wide range of communities.

“Our focus at Homes by Carlton is to provide the right homes in the right locations, and incorporating affordable housing as part of our developments throughout the north is a key component of this. Our partnership with believe housing is one we are immensely proud of and it’s fantastic to be supporting their award-winning development programme.” explained Simon Walker.
