A top award has been picked up by a County Durham housing association in recognition of its commitment to customers and communities over the last 18-months.

believe housing was handed the ‘Housing Organisation of the Year’ honour at the Chartered Institute of Housing’s Northern Awards. The title recognises the work done to keep believe housing customers safe during the coronavirus pandemic while meeting the changing needs of more than 18,000 tenants.

The CIH awards celebrate creativity, innovation, and passion, while highlighting best practice among providers of affordable homes across the whole of northern England.

Judges were particularly taken by initiatives like the team who volunteer to provide extra assistance to customers in urgent need of support alongside their normal jobs, and the use of video to maintain contact with customers or help them carry out simple tasks around the home.

The award is the latest in a string of top national and regional honours won by believe housing recently, including the North East Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Partner and President’s Club’ Business of the Year award.

Chief Executive of believe housing, Bill Fullen, said: “We’ve focused so hard on doing what’s right for our customers in very difficult circumstances over the last 18-months or so. This award is judged by experts from housing organisations across the north, so it’s really satisfying to see that they recognise our efforts so much.”

believe housing’s rapidly growing work to protect and enhance the environment was also highlighted. Earlier this year, the housing association became the first organisation of its type to achieve the Carbon Neutral International Standard and the United Nations Climate Neutral Now initiative participation.

Chair of believe housing, Judith Common, added: “The best thing about this award is that it truly is organisation wide. It perfectly shows just how dedicated every single one of our employees has been to delivering services over the last 18-months.

“Whenever we’re lucky enough to win an award I remember that it’s only possible by the sheer hard work of our people on the frontline working to support our customers. To see that work recognised with an accolade like this is brilliant. I hope all of our employees can share the pride of being recognised for a good job done over the last 18-months.”

believe housing was also shortlisted in the ‘Housing Team of the Year’ category at the CIH Northern Awards for its work to support some of its most vulnerable customers.
