The support given to help nearly 100 customers into employment during the coronavirus pandemic has seen believe housing shortlisted for a top award.

The UK Housing Awards has shortlisted believe housing in the ‘Resident employment and training’ category for the advice and guidance given to customers. The Employability Team at believe housing impressed with their adaptability and commitment, offering a wide range of solutions and support for those who are in work and those who are looking to move into employment.

The team offers fully tailored one-to-one support for customers looking to get back into work, or find a more sustainable job. They focus on changing long-term opportunities for customers rather than meeting targets.

The team also offer a far more in-depth and long-lasting support than most organisations. They keep in touch for up to 26 weeks after customers start work and can provide help with things such as clothes for interviews as well as the more obvious issues including CV writing.

Customers have been helped into everything from caring roles in local nursing homes, to becoming a self-employed gas engineer. The team also has a dedicated member who provides support and guidance on finding work that has better long-term prospects. Moving from a zero-hour contract to a steady role with predictable hours has changed the lives of many believe housing customers.

Engagement and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at believe housing, Rachel Edmunds, said: “We see our role as breaking down barriers, not just offering advice. The team get enormous satisfaction from helping our customers, but this shortlisting means so much to us.

“To be in the running for such a prestigious national award is amazing, and real testament to just how successful the team are at what they do.”

The shortlisting comes on the back of a string of award successes for believe housing. The County Durham-based housing association picked up the prestigious ‘Business of the Year’ title at the North East England Chamber Business Awards earlier this month and has also had big wins at the Northern Housing Awards and other key sector honours.

The winners of the UK Housing Awards will be announced at a ceremony during November.
