College students help local people to get online

19 November 2015 - Latest news

College students are telling people ‘there’s never a better time to get online’.

‘Time to get online’ is a training programme that aims to improve people’s digital skills and has recruited the help of East Durham College students to spread the word.

Student volunteers have been working with programme organisers to become ‘Digital Champions’, and are using their skills to help others to get online and make the most of what the internet has to offer.

Jordon Wolfenden, 19 from Murton, is currently studying for a Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT, and has helped local people at a recent free training session.

He said: “I use the internet every day and take for granted that people have the same understanding as me.

“I’ve really enjoyed showing attendees all the things the online world offers, like keeping in touch with friends and family, looking for jobs, and saving money; and it has also helped me to gain experience of training and events in the working world.”

Digital Inclusion Project Co-ordinator, Vickie Musgrove, would encourage anyone who would like to improve their confidence around the internet to get in touch.

She said: “It’s fantastic to be able to use the skills of such young volunteers, who probably can’t remember a world without the internet!

“We want to show people that online technology is nothing to be afraid of and the benefits in all aspects of life are endless.”

Time to get online is delivered through a believe housing, Dale & Valley Homes, Durham City Homes, East Durham Homes and Teesdale Housing Association partnership.
