believe housing’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic has earned a top honour at the largest awards event for home providers in the north of England.
The County Durham-based housing association earned the top spot in the ‘Covid Resilience’ category at the virtual Northern Housing Awards on Thursday, 13 May. The award is the latest in a string of top honours that believe housing has landed in the last two years.
Judges at the Northern Housing Awards were impressed by how believe housing reacted speedily to the coronavirus pandemic and put customers welfare at the forefront throughout. Earning particular mention were the team of trained believe housing volunteers providing urgent support to customers; one of the lead members of the team even earning an MBE for her efforts.
Also highlighted were a £150,000 community funding programme aimed at tackling effects of the pandemic in some of the communities that were hardest hit. believe housing’s use of technology was praised too. Home viewings were carried out by video call, self-help videos were created for customers to minimise face-to-face contact and new ways of communicating with tenants were put in place.
Chief Executive of believe housing, Bill Fullen, said: “The coronavirus pandemic created all sorts of challenges. But we’re so proud of how all of our people responded and ensured the safety of our customers in some of the most difficult circumstances seen for generations.
“We responded in the way we did because we knew it was the right thing to do, but it’s nice to see that our work has been recognised at this level.”
believe housing was also shortlisted in the Affordable Housing Scheme, Landlord of the Year and Northern Housing Team of the Year categories at the virtual event.
The Northern Housing Awards gong is the latest to join trophy cabinet at believe housing. The Guardian Public Service Award for housing and Homebuilder of the Year at the UK Housing Awards, alongside believe housing making the shortlist in the Landlord of the Year category at the same event.
