Funding helps to light up Weardale village for Christmas

Funding helps light up Weardale

19 December 2017 - Latest news

Stanhope begins to celebrate the festivities with a Christmas tree and lighting thanks to one of the region’s largest landlords.

believe housing has awarded funding through its ‘believe housing community grant’ scheme to help the newly created ‘Light up the Dale’ initiative provide seasonal decorations and a celebratory focal point in the Weardale town for the first time in many years.

The idea was developed by local people to assist smaller communities in Weardale to install Christmas lights and decorations, which would otherwise miss out; and Stanhope is the first beneficiary.

believe housing Funding Officer, Damian Pearson, said: “It’s great to see Stanhope looking so festive. We were very pleased to be able to help the Light up the Dale initiative to transform the market place for Christmas.

“The project is exactly the kind of work that ‘believe housing community grant’ was set up for; where a relatively small amount of money can make such a big difference to the community.”

Light up the Dale are already looking into how festive cheer can be spread to other villages in Weardale next Christmas.

Heidi Maddison from Light up the Dale, said: “We would like to thank believe housing for their support with this new project. We have been encouraged by the help provided by them, our other grant funders and local businesses and individuals. The tree in Stanhope has provided a real community focus and has brought a lovely festive feel to the market place. In the coming years we want to support other Weardale communities in planning Christmas lights and trees. We hope that this will be an ongoing project for many years to come.”

Any community organisation, non-profit making group, charity or school working in the areas served by believe housing is eligible for the ‘believe housing community grant’ scheme.
