Rent arrears can lead to eviction fears

Four housing association tenants have lost their home after collectively accruing £15,700 in rent arrears.

Failure to pay rent over a prolonged period has left four County Durham Housing Group tenants looking for a new home.  Tenants in Peterlee, Coundon and Bowburn have been evicted, each for substantial rent arrears.

The evictions took place, following court proceedings, in early December.

County Durham Housing Group Income Recovery Manager, Ian Ferguson, said: “The vast majority of our tenants pay their rent on time and in full. It is only fair to those customers that anyone who fails to pay rent is handled appropriately.

“Eviction really is a last resort; something we’d only consider in cases where tenants have accrued substantial arrears over a significant period of time.

“Our Tenancy Sustainment Team work extensively with people who are struggling to pay their rent. In most cases problems can be overcome and tenants do not lose their homes. But, unfortunately, in some cases customers can and do if they fail to pay their rent.”
