Right to buy and acquire

Some of our tenants may be eligible to apply to buy the property they live in at a discount through our right to buy/right to acquire schemes.

what does right to acquire/right to buy mean?

Preserved Right to Buy and Right to Acquire are schemes which allow some of our tenants to apply to buy the property they live in at a discount. You’ll need to fill out an application form to be considered.

Preserved right to buy

If you were a tenant of Durham County Council on 13 April 2015 and your home was transferred to us as part of the Stock Transfer process, then you may have a Preserved Right to Buy.

Further details of the Right to Buy scheme (which operates in a similar way to the Preserved Right to buy scheme) can be found on the government website.

Right to acquire

If you don’t have a Preserved Right to Buy, you may have a Right to Acquire your home if you’ve had a public sector landlord for three years.
