Talk Money Week

Simple Ways to Save on Your Energy Bills

We know that managing money can be stressful, especially when energy bills keep rising. That’s why we’re supporting Talk Money Week, a national campaign to get people talking about money and feeling more confident about managing it.

This year, we’re focusing on energy savings because small changes can make a big difference.

Why Talk About Energy?

Energy bills are one of the biggest household expenses, and many of our customers are feeling the pinch. But the good news is, there are simple, low-cost ways to cut your energy use and keep more money in your pocket.

Here are some practical tips to help you get started:

  1. Switch Off Standby – Many appliances use energy even when you’re not using them. Turn off devices at the plug—especially TVs, game consoles, and kitchen gadgets. You could save around £60 a year just by switching off standby.
  2. Turn Down the Thermostat – Lowering your thermostat by just 1°C can cut your heating bill by up to 10%. Try setting it to 18–20°C and layering up with warm clothes indoors.
  3. Cut Shower Time – Shorter showers use less hot water. If everyone in your household cuts their shower time by just one minute, you could save £70 a year on energy bills.
  4. Wash Smart – Use your washing machine at 30°C and wait until you have a full load. Avoid using the tumble dryer if you can—air drying is free!
  5. Block the Draughts – Use draught excluders, seal gaps around doors and windows, and close curtains at night to keep the heat in. These small fixes can make your home feel warmer and reduce heating costs.
