Young people in Brandon have gained valuable life skills through a hands-on food safety course, funded by believe housing.
Brandon Carrside Youth and Community Project gave 13 young volunteers the chance to gain level one certificates in food hygiene.
The group, along with two members of staff, were taught basic food hygiene and handling skills, such as preventing food contamination, storing food safely, and the correct temperatures for cooking, cooling and reheating food.
As well as learning important life skills, the Healthworks training has enabled participants to take a more active role as volunteers at the centre, supporting activities for younger children, and gain a recognised qualification that will give those looking for work in the hospitality sector an extra advantage.
“By holding this food hygiene training, it helps them stand out from their peers and demonstrates that they already understand essential food safety principles” said Julie O’Connor from the Brandon Carrside project.
“Our young people often choose to cook during our youth sessions, and this is an invaluable life skill that will stay with them forever.
“Learning to handle food properly, understand how bacteria can affect health, and develop safe cooking practices ensures they build lasting, responsible habits.”
The County Durham-based housing association believe housing awarded a £500 community grant to cover the costs of the course, refreshments and first aid kits for use by the group.
Kimberley Smith, a Community Investment Coordinator at believe housing, said: “Food hygiene skills are important for young people, particularly for those considering roles in food and drink.
“We’re pleased to support projects like this, which strengthen communities by giving volunteers the skills to play an active role, while also helping young people build training and experience that can support employment.”
