Funding helps group provide women’s mental health support

“I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders” and “It’s a room full of understanding, amazing women who empower me.”

That’s how women at a Seaham-based support group describe the difference it has made to their mental health, thanks to funding from believe housing.

Every Wednesday at Parkside Community Centre, Laura’s Ladies Club meets for a cuppa and a chat, creating a safe space for women experiencing mental health issues. The group helps reduce loneliness and offers support to prevent self-harm and suicide.

Alongside the weekly meetings, the club runs meditation sessions and social activities including quarterly meals.

Founder Laura Allen-Carr established the group after recognising a lack of accessible support specifically for women during her own struggles,

“When I saw services were under pressure and how long NHS waiting times were, I recognised there was a need for a safe, welcoming space where women could come together, “she said.

“Instead of waiting for that change, I created it myself. I wanted to build an environment free from judgement, where women could speak openly and connect with others who may be facing similar challenges and reminding them that they’re not alone.”

Sessions have now expanded beyond Seaham, to The Heart on the Terrace in Murton and The Fans Museum in Sunderland.

Laura’s Ladies Club was made possible thanks in part to funding from believe housing’s community investment fund. The County Durham-based housing association awarded a £1,000 grant to group towards venue hire, marketing and first aid kits.

“By investing in local groups, we help create strong, supportive communities where people can live well and improve their wellbeing,” said Anne‑Marie Parkin, a Community Investment Coordinator at believe housing.

“Funding for Laura’s Ladies Club will ensure its important work can continue, supporting women through some of the toughest challenges they face.”
