Palings on fences or gates can come loose or fall off. Check out our simple steps to refix a paling to a gate or fence.

For this repair you will need:

1. Nails
2. A hammer

Top tip: When removing the old nails from the paling, make sure you hammer away from your face.

Step one

To get started, remove any nails from the paling using the hammer. Dispose of the old nails, ready for the replacement ones.

Step two

Once you’re ready to refix the paling, check the height against the other palings. Then, check the width between each one, and tap one nail into the paling to keep it steady.

Step three

If you’re happy with the position of the paling, continue to fix in all the other nails. Once all the nails are in place, check the paling is secure.
