believe housing, one of the largest housing associations in the northeast of England, is launching the second round of its Board Trainee Programme to help develop future leadership in the sector.
The initiative offers people from all backgrounds the chance to gain board-level experience and develop the skills to influence decision-making in the housing and community sectors.
Open to those aged 18 and over, the not-for-profit landlord welcomes applicants with no prior board or housing experience but with a passion for making a difference and a belief in creating a life without barriers.
Starting in January 2026, the 18-month programme offers individuals with a strong commitment to social purpose the opportunity to gain practical experience in board-level decision making.
Trainees will follow a structured development plan that includes technical training and opportunities to observe board and committee meetings.
The programme builds on the success of its first cohort, who completed their training in December 2024.
During their time on the programme, five trainees gained valuable insights into board operations, experienced personal and professional growth, and unlocked new opportunities.
One of them, entrepreneur Amy Mooney, went on to become a board member at believe housing.
She said: “believe housing’s Board Trainee Programme gave me the kind of access that’s hard to get when you’re not already in the sector; direct exposure to housing governance, boardroom decision-making, and the wider social housing ecosystem.
“It’s equipped me with insight, skills, and experience to move confidently into a permanent board role and beyond.”
Kirsty Withers, who joined the board at Harrogate Housing Association after completing the programme, said: “It was great to be part of the inaugural Board Trainee Programme. “believe housing really innovated to develop a programme that is only the start of increasing diversity in the non-exec space.
“Not only did I learn a lot to kick-start my own non-exec journey, but I also met a great network of like-minded people.”
And Victoria Worrall said: “The programme gave me valuable experience across all business functions, but most importantly, it helped build my confidence in strategic thinking. It’s an opportunity I wouldn’t have otherwise had at this stage in my career and was genuinely really enjoyable — would highly recommend!”
John Marshall, Chair of the Board at believe housing, said the housing association is proud to be launching its second Board Trainee Programme.
“This is an exciting opportunity to build skills, confidence, and insight into leadership and governance,” he said.
“Participants will engage with a values-led organisation committed to improving homes, investing in communities, and helping people overcome challenges.
“We’re proud of our progress and ambitious to do more, in a sector that plays a vital role in improving lives.
“The programme opens doors for those who may not have had access to board-level opportunities, including people from under-represented backgrounds.
“It’s about building confidence, capability, and future talent. We’re excited to support the next generation of leaders who want to make a difference.”
Trainees will be expected to commit around two days per month to reading papers, attending meetings, and taking part in formal training. The programme is designed and will be delivered in-house by believe housing.
