Adaptations

We want to make sure your home suits your needs.

Housing Adaptations to Support Independent Living and Safety

Some adaptations are provided directly by believe housing, while others are now handled by your local authority. The information below will help you get to the right place quickly.

minor or major adaptations

We continue to provide smaller adaptations that help with day‑to‑day mobility and safety.

Examples include:

  • grab rails (indoors or outdoors)
  • half steps at door thresholds
  • additional stair rails
  • shower seats.

To request a minor adaptation, contact our Customer Hub on 0300 1311 999 or use our customer portal.

We’ll arrange a short visit to assess what you need.

If an Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment is required, we will ask you to contact your local authority’s Social Care team.

For most of our customers, this will be Durham County Council – you can call them on 0300 0267 979 or email scd@durham.gov.uk

Major adaptations are no longer delivered by believe housing. These are now fully managed and assessed by the local authority responsible for your area.

For the majority of our customers, this will be Durham County Council.

Examples of major adaptations include:

  • stairlifts
  • ramped access
  • widened doorways
  • level‑access showers (replacing baths).

To request a major adaptation, please contact your local authority’s Social Care team.

For most of our customers, this will be Durham County Council – you can call them on 0300 0267 979 or email scd@durham.gov.uk

They will arrange the assessments, surveys, approvals and manage all works from start to finish. If rehousing is recommended, you may be referred back to believe housing’s Neighbourhoods Team for support.

If you’re not sure which type of adaptation you need, please contact our Customer Hub on 0300 1311 999.

We can guide you to the right service and support you through the process if needed.
