refix skirting board

If you need to refix a piece of skirting board to a wall, this video takes you through some quick and simple steps. Find out how to refix a skirting board.

For this repair you will need:

  • Cartridge gun
  • Tube of silicone
  • Tube of decorators caulk
  • Scraper
  • Junior hacksaw
  • Wipes

You can also follow along with the steps below:

step one

Start by removing the skirting board altogether, if there’s anything stuck to the back of it, take your scraper and clean it up.

step two

Load your clear silicone into your cartridge gun. Remove the end of the silicone tube and then screw  the top on. Make a small cut to the end, allowing the silicone to flow through.

step three

Make sure your wall is clean, use your scraper to remove any loose material. This will give you a nice surface to stick the skirting board to.

step four

Apply some silicone to the back of the skirting board. You should use blobs spaced out across the width of the board.

step five

Press the skirting board into position, making sure it’s tight. If you get any excess squeezing out the top, you can simply wipe it off with your finger.

step six

Fill in any gaps at the top of the skirting board, use decorators caulk as it can be painted. For best results, apply a thin bead, across the gap all the way along the top and smooth off with your finger. Leave this for a couple of hours and it should be ready for painting.

top tip

It’s safer and easier to remove the top of the silicone tube with a junior hacksaw.
