A customer was “absolutely flabbergasted” to see £46,000 appear in his bank account, after believe housing won a benefits appeal on his behalf.
Money Matters Advisor Lynda Monaghan noticed the man’s income was incorrect during an affordability check when the customer was moving home.
The former security officer had given up work due to ill health and, though he was in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance and Personal Independence Payment, Lynda realised he was also entitled to the Severe Disability Premium.
It turned out the great grandad had been underpaid his benefits for 14 years.
Lynda contacted the Department for Work and Pensions and successfully appealed on his behalf.
Three weeks later, a benefits officer from the DWP rang the customer to say he would start receiving the correct amount along with £46,000 of backdated benefits.
“I was absolutely flabbergasted, shocked,” said the 63-year-old.
“My wife and I have always struggled and though I’ve always tried to have a little bit of money put aside this means whole lot more security for our family.
“I was happy to talk to believe housing because they were very supportive, but I never expected them to be able to help this much.
“I really cannot thank them enough, especially Lynda, for helping us to get the right money and this amazing result.
“I would say to any tenant, talk to them when they say they can help.”
